A child’s question: 'Why does a car move?' A child’s answer: 'Because the car has an engine that runs on gasoline (now some run on electricity) and transfers rotation to the wheels; the wheels turn, and the car moves. The engine is inside the car and invisible from the outside, so it seems like the car just moves by itself, just because.'
Composition is the internal, invisible engine of a work of visual art.
It is the heart of the piece; it is the internal spring that moves the hands of a clock. It is the soul of the work, connecting and uniting all of its parts.
Just like a armature in sculpture, or a plan and blue-prints in construction—composition builds a work of art from within.
