1990
Medium: Acrylic on canvas
Dimensions: 130 × 106 cm
This piece belongs to Joseph Kapelyan’s prominent Family Album collection, which first debuted at the Safrai Gallery in Tel Aviv (1987) and was later showcased at the Stephen S. Wise Arts Center in Los Angeles (1989). The composition immediately transports the viewer to the early 20th century, featuring a finely dressed eleven-year-old schoolboy getting ready for a recitation, who nervously holds a book in his white-gloved hand and a hat in the other; while the canvas is rendered to simulate a vintage black-and-white photograph, the artist breaks the tension with a flash of humor, placing a vibrant yellow ball on the side table. In reviewing the Family Album collection, art critic M. Zaborov famously coined the term "Daguerreo-Romanticism" to describe its unique aesthetic—fusing the moody, nostalgic atmosphere of vintage photography with the deep emotional resonance of Romanticism. This particular artwork stands as one of the later creations within this evolutionary cycle, subsequently included in the Netanya exhibitions of 2006 and 2026.
