About the Artwork
Philip IV in Armour (After Velázquez) is an extraordinary, hand-painted master copy executed by contemporary artist Joseph Kapelyan. Created in 2023, this 40×40 cm oil on canvas painting pays homage to Diego Velázquez’s legendary 1628 portrait of the Spanish monarch. The piece beautifully captures the metallic gleam of the ceremonial armor, the delicate crimson sash, and the dignified, austere expression characteristic of Habsburg court portraiture. Through subtle tonal transitions and a deep command over baroque chiaroscuro lighting, Kapelyan honors the loose yet precise brushwork of the Spanish Golden Age master, creating a museum-grade piece for fine art collectors.
