About the Artwork

This oil on canvas painting pays homage to Martiros Sarian's definitive 1924 avant-garde cityscape, capturing a critical era in the architecture and cultural visual language of Armenia's capital. Recreating Sarian's foundational expressionist approach, Kapelyan masterfully honors the original work’s brilliant handling of sunlight, simplified geometric folk architecture, and vivid color planes.
