About the Work

This piece belongs to Joseph Kapelyan’s prominent Family Album collection, which first debuted at the Safrai Gallery in Tel Aviv (1987) and was later showcased at the Stephen S. Wise Arts Center in Los Angeles (1989). The composition features a couple with a young girl, around nine or ten years old, who is positioned prominently above and between her parents, as if leaning on them both for support; this structural arrangement highlights the deep emotional interconnectedness and steadfast family ties within the household, beautifully contrasting their tender love with the palpable hardships of a demanding, hardworking lifestyle. In reviewing the Family Album collection, art critic M. Zaborov famously coined the term "Daguerreo-Romanticism" to describe its unique aesthetic—fusing the moody, nostalgic atmosphere of vintage photography with the deep emotional resonance of Romanticism.
